What exactly is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is actually quite an ambiguous term, comprising a range of skin issues from severe allergies to genetic conditions such as eczema or rosacea. Sometimes, what people describe as “sensitive skin” is actually just a reaction to a specific product or ingredient, rather than their actual skin type.

Sensitive skin doesn’t have a “one size fits all” definition, but can describe skin that is prone to redness or irritation, has dry patches or broken capillaries, is sensitive to UV rays, reacts poorly to bad weather, or breaks out easily.

How to help sensitive skin

1. Simplify your routine

After walking through the skincare aisle (or watching an influencer’s routine on Instagram), it’s easy to feel as though your skincare routine needs to include at least twenty different steps in order to be effective.

For people with sensitive skin, the most effective care is often the most simple: cleansing, moisturizing, and applying a sunscreen for added protection.

 

2. Focus on strengthening your moisture barrier

Your skin is an incredibly effective and adaptable protective barrier, but unspecialized care, harsh exfoliating products, and over-cleansing can compromise its resilience. For those with sensitive skin, maintaining a healthy moisture barrier is essential.

 

3. Avoid harsh exfoliants and over-cleansing

If there’s a single phrase that sums up sensitive skin treatment, it’s this: be gentle. Sensitive skin needs time to strengthen itself, and harsh exfoliators and scrubs will hinder this process — even if they make your skin feel good in the short term.

Instead of scrubs and exfoliators, choose a gentle, non-foaming cleanser — and wash your face with tepid water instead of hot. And remember, don’t overdo it! Over-cleansing can not only irritate your skin, but also damage your moisture barrier and strip away natural oils that your skin needs.

 

What’s the difference between double-cleansing and over-cleansing?

Over-cleansing is different from double-cleansing (hint: we like double-cleansing!) A double-cleanse is exactly what it sounds like — two separate cleanses, one right after the other. The first cleanse removes makeup, SPF, oil, and sweat from the surface of your face, while the second gets down to the nitty gritty of cleaning out the impurities from your pores. Over-cleansing, on the other hand, refers to cleansing too often (e.g., any time your face starts to feel a little oily throughout the day), which can harm the skin’s moisture barrier and cause irritation. A cleanse (or double-cleanse) in the morning, and another at night, is all you need.

 

4. Patch-test new sensitive skin products

Introducing new products to your sensitive skin is kind of like introducing yourself to a new pet — you have to do it carefully, to make sure they’re friendly. If your products don’t like you, they may cause irritation or an outbreak that could actually worsen your skin’s sensitivity.

To patch-test, apply a small amount of the new product on your skin and leave it for 24 hours. If it doesn’t cause irritation (yay!), you should be able to continue using it.

Patch-testing will also help you identify your triggers, or ingredients that are problematic for your skin. Keep track of which products irritate your skin and compare them, looking for ingredients they have in common. Yes, this is a bit of work, but it’s worth it for happy skin!

 

5. Keep showers short, cool, and effective

Sensitive skin doesn’t exist only on your face — it’s important to treat sensitive skin on your body gently, too.

A long, hot shower may feel great, but taking shorter showers (under ten minutes) with tepid water is much gentler on your skin. Avoid using loofahs or rough exfoliating brushes, which can irritate your skin. And don’t forget to lock in the moisture after your shower with a hydrating body moisturizer.

What to avoid

Sensitive skin varies from person to person, but there are a few things that everyone with sensitive skin should avoid.

 

Sun

Sensitivity to the sun and UV rays is one of the main indicators of sensitive skin. While everyone and every skin type should wear sunscreen every day — yes, every day! — sun protection is even more important for those with sensitive skin.

To combat the sun’s harmful rays, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and avoid synthetic sunscreens — mineral sunscreens like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are much kinder to sensitive skin.

 

Fragrance

For sensitive skin, fragrance is a big no-no. This includes perfumes, essential oils, and undisclosed fragrance (which just means that a manufacturer doesn’t have to tell you which chemicals make up the fragrance). Skin is great at hiding when it’s unhappy — so even if you don’t see immediate irritation after using products with fragrance, damage can occur deep within the skin that won’t manifest itself until years later, when it suddenly becomes red, inflamed, and easily irritated.

For products that do not stay on your face long, such as a cleanser, avoiding fragrance is less important; but be sure you are always using fragrance-free moisturizers and serums.

 

Irritating Ingredients

Fragrance isn’t the only thing on the ingredient list to watch out for — keep an eye out for all types of irritating ingredients. Sulfates, alcohol, preservatives such as parabens and methylisothiazolinone, chemical sunscreens, dyes, and even essential oils can cause dryness, irritation, and allergic reactions. WHAT IS ECZEMA?

Eczema is the name for a group of skin conditions that cause the skin to become red, itchy, and inflamed. Over 30 million Americans have some form of eczema. The most common form of eczema is called Atopic Dermatitis.

Eczema affects all skin colors. The prevalence of eczema is increasing and more common among the Black, Asian, and Pacific Islander population.

Though eczema can appear anywhere on the body, in adults it is usually seen on the neck, upper arms and back, elbow and knee creases, and back of the hands, feet, fingers and toes. The skin around the eyes, including eyelids, may also be affected. While many people first develop eczema as children, it can develop at any point in your life and have a significant impact on overall quality of life.

The most common symptom of eczema is itch.  Research shows more than 85% of people with eczema experience itch every day. For many people, the itch can range from mild to moderate. Up to 30% of people rate sleep disturbance as their most or second most burdensome symptom.

Eczema and its symptoms are different for everyone. 

Here’s what to look for:

  • Itchiness
  • Dry, sensitive skin
  • Inflamed, discolored skin
  • Rough, leathery, or scaly patches of skin
  • Oozing or crusting

You may have all or just a few of these symptoms. There may be times your symptoms go away, and other times when you have flare-ups.  The best way to find out if you have eczema is to consult with a healthcare professional.

HOW IS ECZEMA DIFFERENT IN SKIN OF COLOR

Eczema can look quite different on darker skin tones. Eczema is commonly thought of as a red, dry, and itchy rash – how it appears on lighter skin tones. But redness can be a challenge to detect on darker skin tones which may make diagnosis more difficult.

On darker skin, patches may appear darker than the rest of the skin, looking purple, ashen grey, or dark brown.

When examining your skin, your healthcare provider will look for an area of unimpacted skin first – skin without lesions, to determine the difference in color and texture compared to areas where you have active symptoms. 

Studies have shown that melanin-rich skin does not retain as much water as lighter skin tones, which means that in general, black people are more likely to have dry skin. Although eczema can be found anywhere on the body, eczema on black skin is often found on the fronts of the arms and legs.

Other signs to look for:

  • Very dry or scaly skin
  • Intense itching
  • Skin thickening (lichenification)
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Small bumps on torso, arms, or legs (called papular eczema)
  • Bumps that develop around hair follicles and resemble goosebumps (called follicular accentuation)

A major concern for black skin is the discoloration associated with eczema. Researchers believe black skin with eczema has higher levels of inflammation.  The scratching secondary to the irritation, look of redness and itch of eczema can lead to discolorations, in which an area is lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. This discoloration can last for months, even after the eczema is treated.

Given the tendency to develop long-lasting pigmentary changes in skin of color, it’s important to diagnose and treat atopic dermatitis early and aggressively.

WHAT IS BABY ECZEMA?

 

Eczema is a skin condition that usually appears as an itchy, red patch on the hands, feet, backs of elbows and around knees, ankles and wrists. It also may affect a baby’s cheeks, chin, chest, forehead or scalp. Eczema can appear in other areas too, though not usually the diaper area where moisture acts as a barrier. Dry skin, sweating, pet dander or even dust can cause a flare-up of your child’s eczema. Scratching also can make eczema worse, causing redness, swelling and other symptoms like itching.

Though its cause isn’t completely understood, up to 10 percent of babies and toddlers have eczema. If you have a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever, your baby may be more likely to develop it. Adult eczema may not look the same on a child, which is why identifying symptoms and triggers is important to protect your baby’s skin. BABY ECZEMA TRIGGERS

IRRITANTS

Many soaps, disinfectants and fragrances can make eczema worse for baby’s skin. Common products that may cause a flare-up include: detergents and dryer sheets; bubble bath and some shampoos; disinfectants like chlorine; dyes, and coarse fabrics like wool. Always wash new clothes before they are worn, use dye-free and fragrance-free detergents, and choose sunscreen made for sensitive skin.

ALLERGENS

Typical allergens like dust mites, pet dander, pollen and mold can cause itchy, inflamed skin. Make your home an allergy-free zone by vacuuming and wet-dusting frequently, keeping soft toys (which trap dust) to a minimum and washing them often, and grooming pets regularly.

ENVIRONMENT

Extremes in temperature and humidity may trigger an eczema flare-up. Environmental triggers include very hot or very cold temperatures, high or low humidity, cigarette smoke and pollution. Keep the baby’s bedroom between 68 and 72° F and maintain even humidity in your home.

FOOD

It’s relatively rare in infants, but one in 10 children with eczema experience symptoms caused by food allergies. In general, children under age 5 with severe eczema also may have a food allergy, most commonly triggered by milk, eggs, nuts, seeds or wheat.

MINERAL VS CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

There are two types of sunscreen actives available:

MINERAL SUNSCREENS

Mineral Sunscreens protect your skin from the sun by reflecting as well as absorbing the sun’s rays. They contain mineral particles such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to form a shield that helps deflect UV rays away from the skin. Mineral sunscreens are ideal for sensitive skin.

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS

Chemical Sunscreens work by chemically absorbing the sun’s rays, preventing them from penetrating the skin. They contain synthetic compounds like Avobenzone or Oxybenzone that help prevent damage by transforming UV rays into non-damaging forms of energy, like non-UV light or heat.

WHICH IS BETTER?

The Best Sunscreen Is The One You’ll Use Every Day! Mineral and chemical sunscreens each work differently and some sunscreens use both, so it’s really more a matter of personal preference. Both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are very stable in sunscreen formulas when exposed to the sun.  They are not absorbed by the skin and therefore generally do not cause reactions, making them ideal for people with sensitive skin. No matter which type of sunscreen you choose, make sure it’s labeled “Broad Spectrum” for protection from both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 30 or greater.

ZINC BENEFITS FOR SKIN

Zinc oxide has been used topically for centuries. Today, zinc oxide is a key active ingredient in many diaper rash creams, lotions and mineral sunscreens. In sunscreen formulations, zinc oxide sits on top of the skin providing a protective layer of broad spectrum ultraviolet (UVA/UVB) protection.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

The pores in our skin connect to oil glands under the skin. These glands make an oil called sebum. The pores connect to the glands by a canal called a follicle.
